about

Songs recorded around the Lip Service era (late summer to late fall 2013)

credits

released October 7, 2014

Tracks 1-12 are early mixes & demos, making up what an early version of Lip Service could have looked like
Track 13 was one of two “non-demo” songs I recorded during camp 2013 (I time where I decided to take a break from music to focus on my kids). The other song was It’s Your Way.
Track 14 came after a very interesting music theory class. We were talking about obscure time signatures, eventually coming to the question “could there be a song without a time signature?” After a brief afterschool google my schoolmate Andy conducted, I discovered free time. When a piece is in free time there is written music, a tempo, and notes and rhythms, the only difference is that the performers plays the written notes at their own pace. Most music in free time is improvisational, or based around one single riff. This was the first of two pieces I wrote surrounded around free time, the second was Breaking in a Scary Way, although many other of my songs contain elements of free time. Also, Bethany Simon said Andy looks like a noodle, and I agree. That’s all.
Tracks 15-17 are short demos I recorded with the hope of them possibly turning into actual songs. Track 17 did eventually become the verse of Breaking in a Scary Way
Track 18 is a demo of It’s Your Way
Tracks 18-22 are alternative versions of other songs
Track 23 is a heavily mangled audio recording of a bass solo
Tracks 24-28 are alternative mixes of Sunday Night, a song made up of samples from other parts of the album. The track is supposed to represent nostalgia for other parts of your life, as well as the feeling you get when the summer ends (if school starts Monday morning, Sunday night is all you have left).
Track 29 is an alternative loop to be used for Cool Wave Of Shame (Fill Me Up Inside)
